Powerful Prayer for God’s Protection from Psalm 91

There is no reason to beat around the bush. You and I are facing serious times of trouble in the world, communities, and families. A prayer for protection from the Word of God is key.

Times of uncertainty in today’s world can threaten your safe place and sense of comfort. However, Christ’s followers understand that God’s Word and His divine protection offer hope in difficult times.

It is helpful to be reminded that the shelter of the Most High stands unwavering against the terrors of the night. Your prayer life does not need to cease in times of famine (whether spiritual, mental, or physical). God’s word is Spirit-filled.

If you are not comfortable with prayer, you don’t have to try to think of any new prayer point. You can simply pray the words already contained in the Bible right back to God.

Here are powerful prayers that you can pray for God’s presence, His hedge of protection, and great comfort in your daily life despite fierce lions and dangerous situations.

The Soldier’s Psalm

Psalm 91 is sometimes called “The Soldier’s Psalm.” It is one of the most powerful chapters in Scripture as a prayer of protection.

God’s children experience daily warfare on the spiritual battlefield—both large and small. Some days you shout for joy when God brings victory. Other days exhaustion settles in and you wonder if you have the strength to endure. 

God’s inspired words tucked in this psalm of protection provide you with confidence in Almighty God when doubt and weariness step onto the battlefield in this world today. 

On those hard days, God wraps Psalm 91 around your heart and mind like a protective shield. He reminds you that He has not abandoned you to fight alone or unprotected.

God’s Promises in Psalm 91

Three players interact in Psalm 91: a believer (verses 1-2), an audience of encouragers (verses 3-13), and God (verses 14-16). 

The first two verses provide a humbling example of how to proclaim unwavering trust in God as your shelter and refuge. This beautiful statement of faith flows from a life thankful for His divine protection! 

When the Lord is your dwelling place, no evil, plague, or darkness ever triumphs. The Name of the Lord is mighty to save! Pray these words back to Him as a strong reminder:

  • Loving Father, you promised: “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my Name.” (Psalm 91:14)
  • O Lord, on the days when I struggle, help me remember: When I call to You, You will answer me; You will be with me in trouble; You will rescue me and honor me. (Psalm 91:15)
  • ​Dear Jesus, today and every day: With long life You will satisfy me and show me Your salvation. (Psalm 91:16)
  • O Commander of the heavenly host, you promise: A thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my right hand, but it will not come near me. I will only look with my eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. (Psalm 91:7-8)

Prayers For A Place of Safety

Even though intense battles seem never-ending, you can trust that God is your strong tower. God’s angels stand guard over you at His command. Picturing that truth– actually envisioning His protecting shield in your mind—provides the strength you need to stand in times of great need.

The words of Psalm 91 provide the perfect Bible verses for the most powerful prayers of protection. Simply pray in the first person as you say these words directly to your dear Heavenly Father:

  • Dear Lord, you promise that: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2)
  • Father, remind me each day that: “He will deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover me with His pinions, and under His wings I will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:3-4)
  • Lord, only you can faithfully: “…command His angels concerning me to guard me in all my ways.” (Psalm 91:11-12)

Power of God Prayers

The Soldier’s Psalm concludes as God reassures you that He’s got this. He’s got you. He promises to deliver you from fear and trouble today, tomorrow, and into eternity. 

If you are struggling with feeling His divine presence in our fallen world, these Psalm 91 verses provide power and a sense of comfort through the power of the Holy Spirit. Pray the words back to Him:

  • Father God, “I will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.” (Psalm 91:5-6)
  • O God, “Because I have made the Lord my dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall me, no plague come near my tent.” (Psalm 91:9-10)
  • O Lord, “I will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent I will trample underfoot.” (Psalm 91:13)

Prayers of Protection from the Word of God

Refuge awaits all who take shelter under His protective care. All who hold fast to Him in love. All who know His name. Consistent Bible study is a vital tool for knowing these truths.

Here are key verses from both the Old Testament and New Testament containing the faithful promises of God. They are a beautiful source of comfort as you pray His words back to Him:

  • Dear God, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26)
  • “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
  • Father God, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
  • O Father, I will: “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
  • Lord Jesus, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Prayers for Peace

Lasting peace only comes from God the Father. Despite war, natural disaster, destroying plague, perilous pestilence, or anything else, every child of God can rely on His peace that passes all understanding.

Grief is a natural part of life when dark days happen. God collects every tear in a bottle. But grief is not how your faith life ends. Your story begins and ends in HOPE thanks to Jesus’ life, death, and glorious resurrection.

Pray these words back to Him:

  • Thank you, Lord, for promising: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
  • “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
  • Father, help me remember: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Keep a Prayer Journal

Prayer is powerful, and you have the privilege to come to the Lord with what is on your heart and spilling down your cheeks. 

Logging your prayers and being watchful of how the Lord is moving equips you. It cuts through the noise of everyday life to find fullness in the presence of God.

Bible Verse for Tuesday Morning Prayer

There are numerous passages from the Word of God that can be used as Tuesday prayer messages to the Lord. Here are five good morning Bible verses that are excellent places to start:

  • “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, ESV).

  • “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, ESV).

Every single day you wake up under the direct blessings of God. Rather than listing them for you, take some time pondering these things and giving thanks to God for them.

  • You woke up today with breath in your lungs and the gift of eyesight. Thank you, Lord.
  • You received an education that allows you the blessing to be able to read. Thank you, Lord.
  • God has given you the faith to believe that He is God who sacrificed His Son to give you the hope of eternity with Him. Thank you, Lord.
  • God has provided you with shelter, food, and your basic needs to get through today. Thank you, Lord.
  • God has given you a brain, knowledge, and opportunities to read His life-giving Word. Thank you, Lord.

Gratitude for a Happy Tuesday

When you focus on gratitude, there is little room left for complaining. Gratitude shifts your focus upward, past any momentary affliction. Here are some Bible verses to include in your daily prayer of gratitude for the entire day.

Besides the many popular prayers that you can offer for provision and favor, giving thanks to God is a truly beautiful way to start your day.

Daily morning prayer initiates a thoughtful Tuesday focused on God. It truly prepares your heart to face anything that Tuesday can throw at you! 

  • O Lord, you are the God of hope! I pray that You inspire me to appreciate the small things today. Whether it’s an excellent cup of coffee or noticing a lovely flower, remind me to give You thanks and praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
  • O God, I am so thankful for your Holy Scriptures. Regardless of anything that I face today or the rest of my life, Your Word provides guidance, wisdom, and encouragement. Thank you, Lord God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
  • Jesus, I am so thankful that Your perfect love drives out fear. I am complete in You. I am perfectly loved by You. Let me live in those assurances today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Beautiful Tuesday Morning in God’s Word

One of the greatest blessings that God has given us is His Word. Faithful Bible study reveals God’s strength, wisdom, and unwavering faithfulness. Any beautiful day begins in Scripture, so here we go.

  • “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13, ESV). 
  • “​For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39, ESV). 

Courage for Tuesday

I admit it. Some days I don’t feel very brave. If you struggle with that some days, these verses are perfect.

  • “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV). 
  • Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (Luke 18:27, NIV). 
  • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV).

Is the Lord’s Prayer in the Old ​Testament?

The beautiful roots of the Lord’s Prayer in the Old ​Testament are clearly evident. Though the actual prayer appears only in the New Testament, its roots go way back.

That may come as a surprise, but Jesus was raised in the Jewish culture. Remembering that He shared that same Jewish heritage with the very disciples who asked how to pray helps your understanding. Let’s look closer.

In Matthew 6 and Luke 11, Jesus instructs His disciples (and disciples today) how to pray. Arguably the most well-known prayer around the world, it is also known as the Our Father Prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

From Matthew’s Gospel: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:9-13, ESV).

From Luke’s Gospel: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:2-4, ESV).

The Context

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus Christ regularly went off to a quiet place to pray His own prayers. He understood that God’s help to carry out God’s will demanded significant time with His Heavenly Father. 

Jesus was doing exactly this when the disciples approached Him and asked: “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1, ESV). Without hesitation, Jesus instructed them in this powerful prayer.

He did not propose a magic formula; rather, a model prayer to surrender your life to the will of God.

Christian traditions have added a closing phrase: “For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.” 

Jesus was sent first to the Jews (Romans 1:16; Matthew 15:24), and he was speaking to disciples who were Jewish. Those men of faith and passionate children of God had their feet firmly planted in Old Testament truth.

Old Testament Roots

When Jesus answered His disciples’ question, He framed it in a familiar Jewish context. The Jewish law (The Torah) reigned supreme and taught the elements that all Jews were to include in their prayers. 

Jesus was raised Jewish, as were Jesus’ disciples. Though the Lord’s Prayer is a short prayer, it contains many of the Jewish elements. Reading the Jewish Bible in English is helpful.

The Torah refers to prayer as “the service of the heart.” It was considered an act suffused with love and reverence much like a child approaching a loving parent. 

Originally, the mitzvah to pray did not include any specific times, nor was there a defined text. Every individual chose his or her own words with which to address the Creator. 

There was, though, a standard format for prayer: praise for God, followed by asking Him for all one’s needs, followed by expressing gratitude for all God has done for His people—both collectively and individually.

Here are the elements of the Lord’s Prayer, along with the Old Testament Bible verses that show just how grounded it is in the Old Testament.

Our Father

God’s name is central and the most important element so “Our Father” comes first. The Jews never uttered the proper name of God (even today) to avoid blasphemy. 

Consequently, they proclaimed God as “our Father”, as well:

  • “For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is Your name” (Isaiah 63:16, ESV). 
  • “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and you are out potter; we are all the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8, ESV).

Who Art in Heaven

Christ Jesus also affirmed to His disciples during His earthly ministry that God reigned in the kingdom of heaven. We also see this repeatedly in the Old Testament:

  • “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you” (2 Chronicles 20:6, ESV).
  • “Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases” (Psalm 115:3, ESV).
  • “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place’” (Isaiah 57:15, ESV). 
  • “Thus says the Lord: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool'” (Isaiah 66:1, ESV).

Hallowed Be Thy Name

Holiness is not simply an attribute of God; rather it is the very nature of God. He is the One True God who laid the foundation of the world. Jesus included this truth as part of the prayer:

  • “​And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you” (Leviticus 22:32, ESV). 
  • “And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you” (2 Samuel 7:26, ESV).
  • “And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’” (Isaiah 6:3, ESV).

Thy Kingdom Come

As the Bread of Life, Jesus’ prayer bridged the Word of God beautifully between the Old and New Testaments. Consequently, he taught these founders of the early church about the coming kingdom of God:

  • “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44, ESV). 
  • “Behold, your King is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is He, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9, ESV).

Thy Will Be Done

God’s will and God’s plan will never change nor fail. By including those truths in the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus conveyed that the new covenant believers were to trust God’s perfect will for everyday life, just as believers of old:

  • “He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Daniel 4:35, ESV). 
  • “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God! Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground!” (Psalm 143:10, ESV).

On Earth As It Is In Heaven

Jesus knew that it would be helpful for His disciples to understand that a believer’s walk is not always going to be easy. Nor was it during Old Testament times. 

God’s will on earth unmistakably reigns supreme, just as it does in heaven. This means that God will protect us from all evil – even to the point of sacrificing His only Son.

Martin Luther put it this way: “If we would be Christians, therefore, we must surely expect and count on having the devil with all his angels and the world as our enemies.”

  • “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them” (Nehemiah 9:6, ESV). 
  • “He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Daniel 4:35, ESV).

Our Daily Bread

​Because of Jesus, the Bread of Life, we have the good news of His presence and God’s love. 

  • “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent’” (Exodus 16:16, ESV).
  • “He will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; his water will be sure” (Isaiah 33:16, ESV).

Forgive Us Our Debts

We cannot wipe our own sin away. We cannot cleanse our souls from it, either. Only God can do that. 

Just as the prophets of old fell on their faces before God asking for forgiveness of sins, we do likewise today. Not just to assuage a guilty conscience, but so that God can remove that sin and wash us white as snow.

Keeping open, honest communication with God in prayer and confession, God’s forgiveness washes over us without hesitation. Jesus knew the disciples would desperately need to know that even when they sinned, they could still carry out Jesus’ ministry.

  • “Keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:7, ESV).
  • “And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive” (1 Kings 8:30, ESV). 
  • “Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy” (Psalm 103:3-4, ESV).

As We Forgive Our Debtors

​Forgiving those who have hurt us can be one of the hardest things we ever face. In fact, I wrote a whole book about forgiveness as a Bible study. 

However, forgiving others with a sincere heart frees us from the cage of anger and bitterness. Unforgiveness hurts ourselves, not the offender.

Just as God told His people in the Old Testament, Jesus reminds His disciples today that we need to extend forgiveness as relentlessly as He does.

  • “Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord” (1 Samuel 25:28, ESV). 
  • “Then they said, ‘We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say‘” (Nehemiah 5:12, ESV).

Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Jesus knew from firsthand experience that our spiritual enemy tirelessly tempts us.

With perfect wisdom, He knew that His disciples (both then and now) would need the strength of God Almighty to withstand it, just as believers had for centuries.

  • “For those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up” (Isaiah 9:16, ESV). 
  • “A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good” (Proverbs 16:29, ESV). 

But Deliver Us From Evil

Anyone who does not believe that evil exists has not read Scripture.

Again, Jesus bridges the Old and New Testaments by warning that it not only exists but that only God can deliver believers from it.

  • “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life” (Psalm 121:7, ESV). 
  • “I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless” (Jeremiah 15:21, ESV).

Kingdom, Power, and Glory

Although the Gospel of Matthew does not record the end of the Lord’s Prayer as we say it today, the words are still rooted in Old Testament truth. The power and glory of God were brilliantly displayed as He rescued the Israelites from Egypt. 

His Kingdom, power, and glory shone brightest as He resurrected our Savior Jesus from the grave.

  • “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord” (1 Chronicles 29:11, ESV).
  • “And to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him” (Daniel 7:14, ESV).

Forever and Ever

Our Triune God existed before the timeline of eternity was even established.

Just as the Israelites learned in the Old Testament, Jesus wanted New Testament believers to know that He is the same yesterday, today, and for all eternity.

  • “But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever” (Daniel 7:18, ESV).

Even though this common prayer that we share known as the Lord’s Prayer was memorialized by Jesus in the New Testament, all of the elements are rooted in God’s teaching since the days of Moses and the Patriarchs.

Calming Prayers for Mom Before Having Surgery

My mom has faced some health issues in recent years even though she is in relatively good health. However, today she had surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from her face. I said a lot of prayers for Mom before surgery.

Even though the medical staff reassured Mom that she has the “best” kind of cancer, it is still cancer. A word that can bring fear to the bravest heart.

Mom loved laying out in the sun slathered in suntan oil when she was younger. And her dermatologist said it was only a matter of time before such spots appeared. So how did we prepare for surgery?

We Celebrated First

My family gathered for Mom’s 81st birthday just a few weeks ago. We celebrated her life with fun decorations, enjoyed lots of cake, and prayed for a successful surgery. 

Mom bravely went under the hands of the surgeons in the operating room today. She is now in the recovery process.

The time during her healing process will tell us if the cancer removal was successful. She will need to come to grips with a scar on her face – a hard thing for anyone.

I spent a lot of time in prayer for Mom over the past several weeks. In fact, if you have never kept a prayer journal, that certainly helps see how God moves.

Always Pray in Jesus’ Name

As a Christian, you understand that the power of prayer must precede everything. And that healing prayer is vitally important for the life of a loved one – especially a mom.

Jesus is your power source: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18, ESV). So with confidence and peace of mind, you pray in His name.

Prayer enables you to ask Almighty God in Jesus’ holy name to take control of the situation. So start by asking the Great Physician to positively influence the hands of the medical people for a successful operation and speedy recovery.

God is your heavenly father who cares for you all the time, but most especially in your time of need. At the same time, He has given you free will to determine what you want.

God is a gentleman and does not intrude into your affairs if we do not want him to. In fact, Scripture says, “You have not because you ask not” (James 4:2-3, ESV). So trust His loving arms every step of the way.

Powerful Prayers Before Surgery

So what are the best ways to pray for someone as beloved and important as a mom? And on such a sobering occasion as a surgical procedure?

Inviting the Lord Jesus Christ and Divine Healer is the most crucial step. Here are prayers that I have found helpful during this journey with my Mom to use as a starting point for your own prayers.

Helpful Prayers

Gracious Father, we commit into Your hands the surgeon’s hand and medical professionals. Send Your guardian angels to guide them and preserve Mom with Your healing touch. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 

Dear God, I ask that You come into this operation room and take control of the medical team for Mom’s surgery today. Restore Mom to full health through complete healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

O Lord, please give Mom (and her family) a peace that passes human understanding. You are the God of hope, so with grateful hearts, we ask You to guide the surgical team through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father God, surgery can be a difficult time with all of the worry that we let creep in. You are Lord of lords full of loving kindness, so ease our worry. Let the peace of God rule over any anxiety to bring perfect harmony today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Scripture for Someone Going Into Surgery

Heavenly Father, your promises are as true today as they were in Bible times. You promised, “I am the Lord that heals you” (Exodus 15:26, ESV). I trust that promise while Mom is on the operating table today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus, when you touched Peter’s mother-in-law, her fever immediately disappeared (Luke 4:38-40, ESV). Extend your healing hand over Mom today and completely restore her health. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Lord, You promise in Scripture that when we commit our work and plans into Your hands, You will establish them (Proverbs 16:3, ESV). I commit the work of the doctors and nurses into Your hands for successful surgery and Mom’s healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, give my mom Your peace that surpasses all human understanding. Remove every fear, trouble, and anxiety from her, and fill her with confidence that she is safe in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Good Prayer for Someone Having Surgery

Lord God, bring to the surgeon’s hands all of the skills needed for a successful outcome. Prepare them with sharp minds and grant Mom a full recovery surrounded by loving family and your good things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father, give Mom peace from an anxious heart. Provide her physical body with the best care in that surgery room to give her long life and normal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Jesus, only you can bring the healing power of God. Give the doctors and nurses the skill and ability to make the right decisions to bring Mom safety through surgery. enrich her daily life by granting her complete healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Father, my prayer today is for Mom. As she faces surgery tomorrow, I trust you to guide the hands of the doctor. Calm all anxious thoughts and bring healing in the mighty name of Jesus.

Short Prayer for Successful Surgery and Recovery

Dearest God, we put all our trust in you. Bless the doctor’s hands and the outcome of surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

O God, I pray that the surgery room is filled with the heavenly host. Let them surround Mom, the doctors, and the medical staff to bring healing through a successful surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Loving Heavenly Father, let the doctors and nurses be extensions of your healing hand. We trust you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dearest Jesus, I entrust Mom’s body, soul, and spirit in your perfect hands during surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father, I know that you cherish her more than I do, and pray that you will bring her through better than ever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord God, full health is what I desire for Mom so I boldly pray that be her portion in Jesus’ name. 

Prayer for Safe Operation

Father, as Mom’s surgery draws near, an anxious heart can make peace elusive. Calm her from the inside out as only you can do. Give her comfort in knowing that you are working for her good and your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Lord, give us comforting words of hope and healing to share with Mom as she goes in for her operation. Let those holy words wash over her to bring peace and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus, you can heal all sickness and disease, even those we may classify as incurable. I believe in miracles and pray that you strengthen and heal Mom through today’s operation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord and Friend, I ask that you renew Mom’s health today through a successful operation in such a remarkable way that no one can take glory for it but You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father, you have brought Mom to this point so that you can bring healing to her body. Guide the hands of the surgeon and medical staff to ensure a successful operation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for After Surgery

Father God, thank you for bringing Mom through a successful surgery today. I praise you for working through the doctors to accomplish everything needed to heal Mom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Jesus, I pray that you complete the healing work that you started today in Mom’s surgery. Keep her stable and strengthen her hour by hour as you continue to make her well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, as Mom now moves from surgery to health, bless her with a strong body, mind, and spirit. Let her see Your hand in her healing and rely on You for all the days of her life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Father, I am so thankful that you have brought Mom safely through surgery! I pray that you continue to heal her body so that she can serve you fully with joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray Without Ceasing

He wants you to live a life of constant prayer. In fact, Scripture specifically says, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, ESV). Those moments when you are waiting in the doctor’s office provide great opportunities to talk with God.

Engage in ongoing communication with Him as your closest friend. Such honest and open hearts enable you to build a strong relationship with Him. Over time, you learn to rely on Him for all your needs.

Silent prayers are just as effective as spoken prayers. God’s power resides in both, so if you are uncomfortable praying out loud or find yourself in a situation where you need to be silent, prayer is still possible.

The Bible is as true today as the days in which it was written. God is the healer of your soul and body, offering His resurrection life to bring healing, both physically and eternally.

God wants you to pray when things are going well and when they are going the other way. He wants you to pray about everything and never rely upon your own efforts or abilities.

Why Is Prayer Important?

​Almighty God is the giver of life. As the Great Physician, only He can bring healing into anyone’s life. 

Prayer intentionally brings the power of God into any situation. Although Jesus is always present, He will not barge into your life. He gently knocks and waits for you to open the door. 

Intentional prayer also brings an acute awareness of His presence in your life. As you pray for certain people or situations, you will be able to discern how God is moving. That is a strong way to strengthen your faith!

God promises: “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you” (Jeremiah 29:12, ESV). God is as close as your next breath and hears every word – both spoken and unspoken.

Some medical cases are not physical even though they may appear to be so. Some ailments can only be answered by prayers. Jesus said, “This kind will not go except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21, footnote).

Do Not Be Ignorant of Satan’s Devices

Scripture clearly warns us: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV). 

That passage continues by letting you know what to do: “Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world” (1 Peter 5:9, ESV).

I wrote an entire 8-week Bible study on the armor of God called “Your Strong Suit” based on Ephesians 6:10-18. Understanding the defensive armor that God has provided emboldens us to fight the good fight with prayer leading the charge.

The Armor of God

God has also given you the most powerful offensive weapon: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17, ESV).

In order to use that all-powerful, spiritual offensive weapon, you need to know God’s Word. Studying the Bible is key. Here are several Bible studies to get you started.

Regularly reading through Scripture is also a powerful tool in your spiritual arsenal against attacks of the enemy. Set yourself the task of reading through the Bible by picking one of these free Bible reading plans.

God is For You

Knowing God’s Word is key to an effective prayer life. As you read through Scripture, pick out some key Bible verses to memorize. 

Committing your life and the life of your loved ones into God’s hands is the most effective way to live a God-honoring life full of contentment and peace, despite any hard time that comes.

He is for you and not against you! He will bring about His perfect plan in your life that will be far better than you could have planned.

The goodness of the Lord and His higher power in your life are the greatest blessings that you will ever receive. He faithfully holds you in the palm of His mighty hand.

7 Essential Elements of Prayer (Plus Free Download)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Prayer is a vital, vibrant part of our Christian walk. Consequently, we need to answer the most obvious question first.

What is Prayer?

At its core, prayer is talking to God. Prayer is not meditation or still reflection. Prayer is direct communication with God.

Simply picture a girl or boy having a conversation with their father. They will ask their dad for all kinds of things they need. Later in life, they may also ask for direction or guidance. We can apply this scenario between the children of God and our heavenly Father.

Prayer is a two-way street. We pour out our burdens, struggles, and needs, then we also listen for His answers. Even though we do not hear God’s voice audibly as Moses did from the burning bush, He speaks to us through:

  • His Word
  • Other believers
  • His Creation

Being a bona fide music person, one might add music to that list, as well.

The Purpose of Prayer

Through daily prayer, we worship God, give Him thanks, and lay our requests at His feet. It is much more than a pre-recorded speech that we replay to God each time we hit our knees.

I confess that too often I have spent my prayer time reading off a list of what I wanted God to do for me and how I thought He should meet my needs.

Consequently, several years ago I assigned myself the task to learn the difference between merely saying a prayer and actually praying. I longed for meaningful fellowship with God and to discern God’s will for my life.

You can approach God with any type of prayer: in time of need, a prayer of petition, a prayer of intercession, infinite wisdom, and asking for God’s strength, among many others. You do not have to use the right words or fancy words – simply use your own words.

I am sharing these seven elements (among others) with you because I believe they will add meaning and a personal relationship with God to your prayer time.

Prayer Will Change Your Life

Praying is hard at first – at least it was for me. Having a conversation with someone I could not see was challenging. However, understanding that He is with us and in us through the power of the Holy Spirit in everyday life helps remove that self-imposed stumbling block.

Over time, as prayer becomes part of our daily routine, God will strengthen our faith. We will notice how He has answered prayer and moved in certain situations. Often, He will bless us in ways we never even knew to ask.

I love to see how God has moved in my life and in the lives of those I pray for, so I keep a prayer journal. It is a powerful tool for increasing our faith!

Prayer can be uttered both as a short prayer and long-term. Those quick, “Lord, give me the words to say” prayers are just as important to our faith walk as those long-term, “Lord, what is Your purpose in my life?” prayers.

How Do I Pray?

Prayer is truly a sacred act. It’s a conversation with the Creator of the Universe who knitted you together in your mother’s womb. It is both sobering and an incredible privilege in equal measure.

A daily, dedicated prayer time includes a few tried and true necessities:

  • Empty your mind so that you are fully focused on God. (Mentally setting aside our to-do lists takes some practice.)
  • Pick a place that is soothing and free from distraction.
  • Turn off the television and radio and leave your smartphone out of reach.

And just be real. He already knows everything in our hearts and minds. He simply desires that conversation with us.

The Power of Prayer

Keep in mind that we do not pray alone. With seven billion people on earth, there are likely millions of people praying at the same time on various topics.

As Christians, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit that lives inside of every believer.

Neither prayer nor church was part of my childhood. As an adult, the thought of approaching God in prayer was terrifying. I pictured Him sitting on a cloud, ready to strike me down with a lightning bolt.

Not so! He loves us more than we can possibly imagine. Through prayer, we worship God, give Him thanks, and lay our requests at His feet.

What Do I Say in Prayer?

Jesus’ disciples struggled with that very same question. Consequently, they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray (Luke 11:1). Thanks to their brave question, we have a prayer format that became known as The Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

(Matthew 6:9-13)

From this model prayer, we can apply the acronym “F.A.C.T.S.” to our own prayers in order to include all of the key elements of prayer that Jesus outlined. Let’s take a closer look at these elements.

Element #1: – Faith

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).

Simply put, we need faith to pray. Faith given to us by God is the foundation of a believer’s life. Faith is known as the currency of heaven.

Only through faith in Jesus Christ, his life, death, and resurrection, can we approach God through prayer. He knows us by name and embraces us as His beloved children.

“And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith” (Matthew 21:22).

Element #2: – Adoration

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name” (Matthew 6:9).

Worship and praise of God are certainly essential. Adoration focuses on the character of God and delineates the holy attributes that make Him worthy of all worship.

As we begin our prayer times, we focus on the ONE who hears our prayers rather than jumping straight to our list of needs.

“Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

Element #3: – Confession

“And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).

As we approach God in prayer, we do so with humility through confession. Over the years, I have realized that this confession element includes two specific kinds: (1) confess my sins, and (2) confess my dependence on God.

Confess my sins:

Jesus’ blood shed on the cross provided forgiveness for our sins. Scripture tells us that we are to continually confess our sins understanding that He has already extended forgiveness.  

Why is that important? If God only forgave sins we remembered to confess, we would be in a hot mess. He forgives the sins we confess and those we did not even realize we committed. He faithfully washes us white as snow.

If we forget some of our sins, take heart! The Apostle Paul assures us: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).

Confess my dependence on Him:

Prayer is our white flag of surrender that acknowledges we cannot succeed on our own. We desperately need God to direct and nurture our lives.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me” (Psalm 51:1-3).

Element #4: – Thanksgiving

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Living a life of thanksgiving and gratitude begins in prayer. All blessings come from God, whether we acknowledge them or not.

Thanksgiving carves out time to say a proper “thank you” to God. If you have children and you taught them to say “please” and “thank you,” that is the basic understanding of this element.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Element #5: – Supplication

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Like the “confession” prayer element, supplication includes two specific kinds: (1) our own needs, and (2) the needs of others (intercession).

Supplication:

This is the part of the prayer we lay before the Lord our own needs and struggles. This is not merely a “to-do” list for God; rather, an avenue to discern His will for our lives and to draw us closer to Him. He knows our desires and hurts, and He delights in hearing them from us.

Jesus demonstrated supplication in the Garden of Gethsemane shortly before He was crucified: ” My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).

Intercession:

This is where we lay the needs of others before the Lord. This is a beautiful act of unselfish love for other people and the body of Christ.

God alone knows what each person needs and knows the best way to provide for them. Asking God to move and work on behalf of others is faith-filled love.

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” (Colossians 4:2-3).

Beyond the F.A.C.T.S acronym, I have learned that there are two other important elements of a vibrant prayer life.

Element #6: – Submission

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

Once you have finished praying, acknowledge God’s sovereignty in His answers. Declaring your surrender that His way is the best – even if He denies a heartfelt request – is a sure sign that you are trusting God and walking in obedience.

Element #7: – Listening

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Remaining spiritually alert to how God answers your prayers is another essential element of a vibrant prayer life. He may not bring about the result you want in exactly the way you asked Him to.

However, it is a beautiful privilege to watch how He moves and orchestrates solutions. Such diligent observation increases our faith that He has everything under control.

Simple Prayers

If you are new to prayer, this may seem like a daunting list. Been there. Done that. God still knows your heart.

Remember that there is no distance in prayer. There is no language barrier that prayer cannot overcome.

Like striking a match to generate light and heat, things start to change when you pray. The key is to keep praying and keep those lines of communication open with God.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

Dear Pastor: Will You Forgive Us?

Pastors have answered a high and difficult calling. There are few things that boil my blood faster or put my feet on a soap box quicker than when I hear God’s people hurling mean-spirited or spiteful comments at God-loving, servant-hearted pastors.

It gets ugly when sheep turn on their shepherds. And Satan, along with the world, watches. Smiling.

I love to intentionally encourage my pastors. When I see them at some mid-week church function, I am fully aware that they may have faced strenuous spiritual warfare. The enemy has likely lobbed a stream of fiery darts at them, whether it’s tough counseling sessions, disheartening church politics, or the death of a member.

It’s critical to convey to our pastors and pastor friends just how vital they are to God’s work and His church — to let these grace-filled men of faith know how much they, their families, and their ministries mean to so many.

So…to my pastors, all my pastor friends, and your beautiful families:

You embrace the calling to be crucified with Christ, yet sometimes we are the ones pounding in the nails.

Please forgive us.

You take up the cross of Christ without hesitation because it is not merely your day job–it’s your very calling, passion and purpose. Yet sometimes we watch from comfortable pews without lifting a finger as you stumble under that staggering weight alone.

Please forgive us.

You love us enough to sacrifice family time, shorten vacations and make yourself available 24-7-365. Yet when you need to unplug and allow God to recharge you, we haughtily demand your instantaneous appearance.

Please forgive us.

When life blindsides us with loss, relationship difficulties, health scares or financial burdens, you are the first to offer prayer and call in the posse to help. Yet when you need us, we wear busyness as a badge to dodge.

Please forgive us.

You willingly live in a glass house with our noses pressed against it, gracefully shouldering our smart aleck remarks and quick judgments. Yet when you lovingly ask us accountability questions, our self-righteous indignation could choke God Almighty.

Please forgive us.

But I want you to hear loud and clear: You are not expendable.

You are VITAL.
You are VALUABLE.
You are LOVED.

As you stand at the vanguard of deadly spiritual warfare, it’s an amazing privilege to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you on God’s battlefield. To heartily encourage you when you are weary. To follow where God calls you to lead.

THANK YOU for your integrity and tireless commitment.

When We Need To Know Who We’re Praying To

Whether it’s first thing in the morning, or before turning in for the night, prayer can be hard on some days.

Depending on our circumstances, some days we want God to be massive and huge. We need Him to take on our bullies and win with one hand behind His back.

Other days, we need Him close enough to catch our tears and hear painful words we can only whisper.

The good news is that He is both.

Simply looking at the universe confirms that God is far bigger than we can ever grasp. We live on a little blue globe that orbits in one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in the known universe.

In fact, Earth isn’t even the biggest deal in our own solar system next to Jupiter.

Yet Earth is the one privileged place where God chose to place His most precious creation: mankind.

We are the only things in ALL of creation made in His image.

Heaven’s expanse declares the size and glory of God. We cannot measure God with a tape measure, ruler or yard stick. In the economy of the universe, He is measured in light years. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second and one light year is 5.58 trillion miles.

Yet God didn’t even lift a finger to create the heavens and earth:

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth.” Psalm 33:6

Our God breathes stars and galaxies.

Yet in spite of God’s vastness, He chose to make us. Fragile, demanding, unruly, self-centered us.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made by God Himself.

Out of the seven billion people currently on Earth, no two are alike. For each person, God mapped out and wrote a brand new DNA code that had never before existed, nor will ever exist in the future. You and I are the definition of “custom made.”

Each of the 75 trillion cells in your body consists of a DNA that makes up unique, miraculous you.

You may not think that you are special, but you are a walking miracle.

God promised that for those who trust in Him, He will hold us in the palm of His hand and carry us all of the days of our life.

Even when we can’t fathom His bigness, even when we can’t feel His closeness, He promised us something incredible:

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17

So when you’re facing your toughest day, your hardest trial, how do you know if God can hold you together?

Because He promised it.

He may not change your circumstances — He didn’t change them for Jesus — but He works in every circumstance to bring about good.

So as we pray, we are communicating with the universe-Maker who became mankind’s Savior.

The star breather who became our sin bearer.

And He holds you in the palm of His mighty hand …

… simply because of how much He loves you.
